At the height of his fame in the late 1960’s, it’s hard to imagine anyone needing a private island quite as much as the late John Lennon. Beset upon by screaming fans on both sides of the Atlantic and rapidly becoming an influential political activist, the superstar Beatle must have been relieved to spot the newspaper advertisement for a secluded, peaceful island in Ireland’s rustic Clew Bay. Bought in 1967 for just £1,700, the 19-acre Dorinish Island was intended to be the site of his holiday retreat, but after falling into disuse, became the permanent campground for a colorful group of 25 hippies (much to the dismay of local area residents). After Lennon’s tragic death in 1980, the island was sold to a neighbour by Lennon’s widow Yoko Ono, with the £30,000 proceeds donated to an Irish children’s charity. Dorinish has reverted from the hideaway of one of the world’s most famous men back to its modest roots as grazing land for sheep and cattle, but to this day still receives pilgrimages from enthusiastic Beatles fans from across the globe.
